6 Herbs For Summer Hydration And Keeping Your “Cool”

Sometimes keeping hydrated and cool during the Summer is like riding the struggle bus. Drinking enough water is really important, but often it’s not enough. Adding plants into your water, tea, and smoothie can really help kick it up a notch.

Most of the herbs listed below are cooling, moistening, and a demulcent, which means they literally have a gooey substance that helps soothe mucus membranes. These nourishing substances deepen hydration and help ensure everything in our body is working well.

Aloe

Aloe is an all time summer staple. It’s both a cooling and moistening herb for both the skin and body. When you get too much sun it externally and internally keeps you cool and hydrated. Add it to your ice-cube tray with some mint and berries for extra flavor and freeze up for an hour. Or straight into your smoothie because you won’t taste a thing. It’s extremely soothing to irritated/burned skin, and it helps internally build the immune system.

Plantain

Plantain is a moistening herb that is cooling, nourishing, and healing. It moisturizes our mucus membranes, which help balance the waterways and moisture level to be just right. This ensures everything works well and is what we need to cool down our system mentally, physically, and emotionally. Be one with this and infuse with water daily. It will help you get through the frazzled summer heat in more ways than one.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow is cooling, moistening, and a demulcent. It’s nourishing food and aids in our waterways, just like plantain. It’s best made as a long, cold infusion (8 hours/overnight) to extract it’s hydrating properties.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus flower is a beautiful bloom you can find all over the world. It’s fresh in the markets and grocery stores of Mexico by the pounds. It’s best to drink as a tangy, sour, iced-tea. It will easily add to your daily vitamin c and cool you off in no time.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is from the mint family and super bright tasting to the mind and body. It helps uplift the spirits and calm the hear and spirit. It’s perfectly brewed as a sun tea, but best as a cold infusion in the Summer to beat the heat and anxiety that comes with it.

Rose

Rose petals and rose hips are both high in vitamin c and are tangy and cooling. I love adding them to my daily infusions, but if you’re feeling crazy you can create a yummy rose syrup or even infuse your honey. Enjoy the summer days by cooling off and nourishing your heart with this sweet summer rose flower. It has my heart. 🌹
